On Thursday March 23, a number of Year 11 & 12 students were privileged to attend the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix’s ‘Driving Learning’ day at Albert Park. ‘Driving Learning’ allowed the girls the opportunity to network with various universities, industry groups and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths)-related entities, in order to help inform their post-school options. The girls were able to discuss potential career options with groups such as Boeing, the Victorian Space Science Education Centre, and Victoria Police, as well as enjoy the on-track racing.

The day was a wonderful success, with a number of young ladies coming back with a far greater resolve to follow their career ambitions, particularly into various Engineering fields. The ladies conducted themselves in a way that was a credit to themselves and are to be congratulated for taking the initiative to get involved in such an opportunity.

On the 8th of March 2017, Year 7 to 10 students attended a Social Smarts & Anti-Bullying program run by Incursions R Us. The Social Smarts & Anti-Bullying program was designed to build resilience and provide the students with logical strategies to use when dealing with negativity and conflict, right through to instances of bullying.

We believe it is fundamental for students to be educated about the instances in which bullying may occur and be able to identify and differentiate between a ‘bully’, ‘victim’ and ‘bystander’. This program taught the ‘5 Finger Rule’ in order to manage conflict and allowed them to apply their understanding in a role play setting. Nevertheless, students were also given the opportunity to develop social skills during the program, where they learnt how to understand body language and demonstrate active listening.

We were glad to see students enjoy re-enacting different bullying scenarios and dealing with conflict in a positive way with their peers.
